Lamont Roach (25-1-2, 10 KO) says he should have won the battle against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 COs) on Saturday night and he would have the referee made the right call in ninth when the tank hit him with a punch in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Many fans on social media felt that Roach had won, and they had never seen so bad before. The inactivity, weak resume, and he who looks out Roach may have cost him.
Roach says he didn’t trust the Knockdown he would win because he thought he had done more than enough to win the decision. The judges achieved a 12-round draw with the scores 15-113 for tank, 114-114 and 114-114. It certainly seemed Roach had won the battle, even with the referee blowing the call in ninth place.
“I thought I should have won without being regarded as a Knockdown,” Lamont Roach told the mediaAnd talk about the call by the referee, who chose not to give him credit for having dropped Gervonta Davis in the ninth round when he had a knee.
Of course, it helps that Tank Davis was the superstar in this battle, and the one who sold out the Barclays Center. If the referee made the right call in ninth place, he would waste things for a popular money maker.
“If he had to sweat from his eye, he had to wipe the whip out of his eye. But the rules mention that if you voluntarily take a knee, it is an automatic eight count. I didn’t trust it. I rely on what I did there, ”says Roach about Tank Davis.
“I took control, I landed more shots, and I landed more power shots. I thought I was doing my thing. So I am not really so frustrated about it, but if it is regarded as a knockout, I would have been a majority decision.
“Did you see me say in the ring,” Keep counting? “I was like, ‘Why did you stop? Keep counting, ” Roach said about how he didn’t understand why the referee stopped counting after Davis took a knee in ninth place. “I honestly don’t know (about why the referee doesn’t have a knockout).”
