England Test captain Ben Stokes believes Brendon McCullum is a very determined man and his appointment as England’s new white-ball coach “will be incredible for English cricket”.
Brendon McCullum has been appointed as England’s new white-ball head coach since Matthew Mott was sacked in July 2024 following England’s unsuccessful T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, where they lost to eventual champions India in the semi-finals.

Stokes feels this is great for English cricket and hopes McCullum can be just as effective in white-ball cricket as he is in England’s Test team.
“I think it’s great for English cricket. What Baz (Brendon McCullum) has come in and given to this team and the people in the team, the confidence he’s given in myself and in this team, is great. I’m really looking for the guys in the white-ball team to experience that as well. move on,” Stokes said.

“Baz is very determined” – Ben Stokes
He expressed his excitement and claimed that McCullum is exactly the kind of coach a team wants. He believes that McCullum can have an impact anywhere in the world.
“He’s a fantastic man, a great coach. I’m really excited for the white ball side to be able to go forward with Baz and Jos (Battler). He’s obviously taken the challenge on board because he feels himself. He can make a difference, he’s your coach. It’s something you want, you don’t want a coach who’s just going to come in and fix everything,” he said.
“Baz is very determined. He’s a very determined person to come in and make an impact wherever he goes in the world as a coach. Yes, it’s incredible for English cricket that Brendon is coaching both teams,” the allrounder added.
Brendon McCullum’s first appointment as a white-ball coach
Brendon McCullum’s first assignment as England’s white-ball head coach will be the upcoming T20I and ODI series against Australia at home.
His tenure will be until the ODI World Cup 2027, which will be held in South Africa in October-November of that year.
McCullum is credited for bringing the Baseball approach to England’s Test team. Under this approach, England played an aggressive brand of cricket in the red-ball format and showed an intent to win games.
As a result, England have been fantastic under Brendon McCullum and have lost only one series so far (against India earlier this year).
