Subriel Matias and Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela both named their IBF lights Welterweight title elimination on Friday, March 1, at Coliseo Tomas Dons, in Feeto Rico. The event will be shown Live on dazn.
This is a must-win match for the former IBF champion of 140 pounds of Matias (21-2, 21 COs) if he wants to get a chance to regain his belt he lost last year in a terrible performance against Liam Paro on June 15 in Manati, Puerto Rico. Matias could not use his normal brawling style to reach Paro because he pushed his movement and away.
Paro’s blueprint
Valenzuela (30-3-1, 17 COs) will surely follow Paro’s blueprint by moving and roughly moving Matias when he gets close. However, he has no other options because he is not a big enough puncher to defeat Matias in a firefight. In comparison, he does have power, but not at the level of subriel.
Official weights
Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela 139.8 vs. Subriel Matías 139.8
Alfredo Santiago 139.75 vs. Javier Fortuna 144
It’s hard to know how well Valenzuela, 30, is because he has never strikingly strikingly beat anyone in his nine-year-old pro career in Mexico. He lost against William Zepeda earlier in his career and was also by Montana Love. Valenzuela has since won his last five fights, although at lower level opposition.
The defeat to love took place three years ago in 2022. The man is beaten to work the level of Valenzuela. Talentically, he is more an additional contender rather than a fighter who earns his #4 rankings with the IBF. Therefore, it is important for Matias to win this battle and look good.
If Matias does win, he would have to be really good at defeating IBF champion Richardson Hitchins because he would have a great speed advantage over him. Hitchins can do everything paro has done, but much cleaner. The slower Matias will suit Hitchins if he can take him out to land his shots.
