Golden Boy-Promotor Oscar de la Hoya got some subtle digging on Keyshawn Davis on Saturday night by saying that his fighter, Oscar Duarte (29-2-1, 23 kos) Miguel Madueno (31-4, 28. ), while Keyshawn couldn’t. It’s not that the top-rank-promoted physically couldn’t knock Madueno out.
De la Hoya did not come out immediately and said it, but it is a better fighter than Keyshawn. He stopped saying that, but that is, of course, what he meant when he pointed out that Duarte did better than Keyshawn. He is right. Duarte did much better against Maudeno than Davis.
Fear or strategy?
The power was there for that battle, but the courage was not. After getting a taste of the power of the Mexican fighter, Keyshawn looked afraid to be hit. So, instead of trying a knockout, he turned the battle into a WWE-type game filled with wrestling tactics. The referee allowed Keyshawn to use the tactics without disqualifying him. Last Friday, Keyshawn still used the same tactics.
Davis won the WBO lightweight title last Friday night and steamed a champion Denys Berinchyk in four rounds in the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York. Last year, on July 6, Keyshawn waived the ten round and brought Madueno through a unanimous decision.
Keyshawn seemed to be afraid to fight aggressively against Madueno as he did against Berinchyk because he could hit, and he hit hard in the early rounds when he snapped. Davis seems to give up the idea after the third round when he ate some big blows of Madueno.
