The light heavyweight Ben Whittaker (8-0-1, 5 food) stands in front of veteran Liam Cameron (23-6-1, food) in a re-broadcast two months from now on April 20 in the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, England.
It is unclear why the two even bother for a re -broadcast, because Whittaker, 27, showed that he wanted from their previous fight when he grabbed Cameron, which caused the two out of the ring in the sixth round. Whittaker claims to hurt his ankle and leg in the fall, but fans suspected he had falsified and just wanted to be out of the fight.
Flop watch
The fight showed that the 2020 Silver Whittaker Olympic cannot handle pressure and handle hard shots. It was the same thing we saw of him in his loss of Cuba’s Arlen Lopez. When the Cuban talent was attacked hard, Whittaker melted like butter. What we saw in the Cameron fight was identical to the Olympic match with Lopez. Whittaker went to pieces when he started walking through Cameron, who ignored the junk shows through the cunning, stork-like fighter and hit him hard to the head and body.
Outside the ring, Whittaker speaks a big game but He was pure jelly against Arlen Lopez and Liam Cameron. He looked scared in both fights. Between rounds you could see that Whittaker was desperate to have help, and looked at his corner for instructions to sponsor him in those fights. There was nothing his coach could do differently than barking instructions that Whittaker did not follow.
Is he worth it?
Whittaker’s promoter makes a mistake by choosing to take the rematch with Cameron because this man is wrong. He has the wrong style, he beats too hard, and he has a toughness about him that Whittaker can’t handle. If Whittaker’s promoters look at this battle as a deciser whether to keep him or shower him as useless luggage, the rematch is meaningful. This is a good test to decide whether Whittaker is worth keeping.
If I were the Whittaker promoter, I would have dumped him to the Cameron fight immediately. I have seen what I needed to be off that collision and from his collapse against Arlen Lopez in the Olympics to know that he is a waste of time. He was not built to deal with pressure and pain.
