Barcelona confirms Ronald Araujo’s long-term contract

Barcelona have confirmed that an agreement with Ronald Araujo is in place on a new long-term contract with the club.

Araujo’s future has long been the subject of uncertainty, with the Uruguayan heavily linked with Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Manchester United in recent seasons, with his contract set to expire in summer of 2026.

The versatile defender was also a salable asset at a time when Barcelona were desperate for cash injections. But with the club now putting several years of financial troubles behind them, Araujo’s value on the pitch is greater than his market value.

The new contract is for six years and will run until the end of the 2030/31 season. If he sees it, Araujo will have been a Barcelona player for more than a decade when it’s over.

The Thw player joined Barcelona from little-known Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018, initially linking up with the Atlético squad and becoming a first-team regular a few years later.

In 2023, Araujo became third captain and was then promoted to vice-captain last summer when general skipper Sergi Roberto left the club.

A serious hamstring injury sustained during the Copa América, which required surgery at a specialist clinic in Finland, ruled Araujo out of the first half of this season. But he made his comeback against Barbastro in the Copa del Rey, carrying the arm in Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s absence, and has since started games against Real Madrid, Real Betis, Getafe and Benfica in four competitions.
