Virgil van Dijk equaled Liverpool’s club record for most wins in a player’s first 50 Champions League games as the Reds beat Lille on Tuesday.
Van Dijk played 90 minutes comfortable 2-1 winwho kept Liverpool 100% fit in the Champions League this season.
It was his 50th appearance Liverpool in the Champions League and the 35th time he has won, equaling the previous record set by the legendary Phil Neal.
Neal, who is Liverpool’s most successful player in history with a return of 23 trophies between 1974 and 1985, lifted four European Cups during his time at Anfield and is currently seventh in the club’s all-time appearance with 650 appearances to his name.
Manager Arne Slot remains impressed by Van Dijk, whose expiring contract does not appear to affect his form on the pitch alongside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“The situation hasn’t affected the group and actually only one of the players has had a bad performance this season and that was Trent against (Manchester) United,” Slot said. Amazon Prime before the match
“Every other game we’ve played, Virgil, Mo and Trent have always met or passed the standard.”
