Oscar De La Hoya over Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney Rematch: “No Need For It”

Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya says he prefers Ryan Garcia to forget about a rematch with Devin Haney and wants him to fight WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez instead.

With Ryan’s charisma and a huge following on social media, a clash between him and Teofimo (21-1, 13 KOs) would bring in plenty of pay-per-view buys on DAZN.

No Rematch needed

It will be a matchup that will attract fans worldwide as Teofimo is still seen as an undefeated fighter in the eyes of many due to his loss to George Kambosos Jr. a close one that could have gone either way. It was when Teo was sick and injured.

Turki Al-Sheikh is reportedly negotiating the rematch between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. It still doesn’t sit well with De La Hoya, who sees Devin already outgunned by Garcia in his one-sided 12-round drubbing of the Bay Area native.

Haney should come back from the line because he has his chance against Kingry, and he failed miserably. All this whining Haney has been doing since then about Ryan’s failed test looks bad, showing that he can’t admit he’s beaten. You have to bet that if the rematch happens, Haney will use Ryan’s failed PED test as his marketing strategy throughout the promotion.

Image concerns

It would be a huge negative for Ryan’s career if Devin and his father, Bill, remind fans that he tests positive for Ostarine in every interview. Even if Ryan wins again, his image will be tarnished forever just because of the constant bad mouthing of the Haneys.

There could be trouble if Haney tries to get Ryan to agree to VADA against his wishes. He feels suspicious of Devin and his father, Bill Haney, pushing so hard.

De La Hoya sees no point in fighting Kingry against a beaten opponent, Haney, as he soundly beat him on April 20 last year. It’s not good enough to run it back for no real reason other than money. Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) can do a lot more.

Golden Boy’s Plan

“I personally see no need for it. Ryan destroyed him, and that’s the bottom line,” said Oscar De La Hoya Fight Hub TV about seeing no need for a rematch between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. “We have to make the best fights possible.

“There are fighters that we can combine Ryan with anyone and make a great event. If (Kingry and Teofimo) are the best at the moment, and that’s what people want to see, we have to make it,” said De La Hoya.

A fight between Ryan and Teo will sell and generate interest for fans. However, Haney is not a PPV attraction, lacks charisma and has little to say in interviews. His father, Bill Haney, keeps fans interested in his fights. Dev already had his chance so he blew it.

Haney was no match in that fight, and the only reason he saw the final bell was because the referee bailed him out in the seventh round.
