Newcastle United booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup by coming from behind to beat Bromley 3-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Magpies were riding high into this cup tie, and the Toon army must have thought they would enjoy a quiet afternoon. Newcastle’s stellar form has seen them climb to fifth Premier League tableand they recently took a giant leap towards the Carabao Cup final by beating Arsenal 2-0 away from home.
However, Eddie Howe’s side were quickly brought back to earth by the Ligue 2 outfit. The manager’s much-rotated eleven were stunned in the early stages. Cameron Congreve achieved what the Gunners had failed to achieve in midweek when he broke through the defenses of Martin Dubravka with a curling effort from distance.
It didn’t take long to Premier League However, to restore parity Lewis Miley, who has barely featured this season after returning from a long-term injury, grabbed the equalizer at home to Newcastle.
The hosts then took full control and should have taken the lead through William Osula immediately after Miley’s equaliser. NewcastleThe team’s superiority for the rest of the first half came as no surprise as they enjoyed 86% of the ball, but Bromley were stubborn enough to head into the break at 1-1 .
There was no messing around from Howe at the start of the second half with Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes entering the fray, the former coolly slotting home a penalty from 12 yards to give Newcastle their first lead of the cup tie three minutes after the restart.
Osula, in a rare outing after arriving in the summer, added a third for the hosts with a belter finish, his first for the club. Newcastle’s second-half comfort allowed Howe to add 17-year-old Trevan Sanusi to proceedings for his competitive debut, and the Magpies held on to a two-goal lead untroubled in the closing stages.
