Saturday’s FA Cup third round results


The third round of the FA Cup hit the ground running on Saturday, with a host of heavyweight Premier League clubs desperate not to go down.

For Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City, they found no problems against their respective lower league opponents Accrington Stanley, Morecambe i City of Salford – a 17-0 aggregate result that shows the gulf in class between the first and fourth tiers of English football.

Brighton & Hove Albion impressed with an emphatic 4-0 win over Norwich City at Carrow Road, while Bournemouth also reminded everyone of their improved Andoni Iroala’s credentials by beating past five promotion hopefuls Championship West Bromwich Albion.

Leicester City and Nottingham Forest were the other Premier League winners – the former dispatching Queens Park Rangers with gusto while the latter dismissed Luton Town – but there was a huge shock in west London.

Plymouth Argyle, just sacked Wayne Rooneyscored the only goal of the game to beat Brentford, a team with one of the most impressive home records in the Premier League. Morgan Whittaker was the match winner, finding space on the edge of the penalty area before firing home into the bottom corner.
