The Diamond League introduces a new prize money structure for 2025


As well as increased prize money, there will be new Diamond+ disciplines with greater financial incentives

2025 Diamond League adopts brand new financial structure, athletes have the opportunity to secure more prize money than in previous years.

In most of the Diamond League, athletes will win up to $10,000 in individual events and then $30,000 in the finals in Zurich.

However, there will now be a number of events where athletes can earn more prize money.

These will be through the Diamond+ disciplines, where athletes will receive up to $20,000 in a series of meets and then $50,000 in the final.

There will be four Diamond+ disciplines, two men’s and two women’s, in each meeting, and eight in Zurich, four men’s and four women’s.Each meeting will announce its Diamond+ disciplines in the first half of 2025.

Next year’s Diamond League season includes 15 matches across four continents and 13 countries.

The 2025 season kicks off in Xiamen on April 26, with the Diamond League remaining in China in Shanghai/Suzhou on May 3.

After that it’s Doha and Rabat before the European leg of the season kicks off in Rome on June 6.

Meets follow in Oslo, Stockholm and Paris before the athletes fly to Oregon on July 5 for the Pre Classic.

They will then compete in Monaco and London over the next two weeks before taking a break in early August.

The Diamond League returns with Silesia on August 16, then Lausanne and Brussels before the big showdown in Zurich.

With next year’s World Championships in September in Tokyo (13-21), the Weltklasse Zürich will essentially be the last chance for athletes to hone their craft before heading to Japan.

Including advertising fees, athletes will be paid a total of about $18 million during next year’s Diamond League season.

By comparison, the Grand Slam Track, Michael Johnson’s new running league, which launches in April 2025, will award $262.5K in prize money at each of its respective four meets, with the winners taking home $100,000.

The recent Athlos meet in New York, created by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, awarded $110,500 across six women’s races, with the winners pocketing $60,000.

The World Athletics Championships will also start in September 2026 with a prize money of $10 million, with the winners securing $150,000.
