Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted he has no regrets once again leaving Marcus Rashford out of his squad for Thursday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Rashford, who admitted a desire to “new challenge“after being dropped for the Manchester derby, watched from home by Spurs achieved a spectacular 4-3 victoryin which Alejandro Garnacho appeared from the bench after also being sidelined for the derby.
Before the game, Amorim was asked to explain his decision to drop Rashford.
“Selection,” he said Sky Sports. “I picked the players that I felt were ready to handle the demands of playing a strong game.
“I try to visualize the whole week and then pick my players. Just selection.”
It was a risk that didn’t pay off here as United were knocked out of the cup, but Amorim insisted he wouldn’t hesitate to make the same decision again if given the chance.
“If I feel like I’m doing the right thing for the team, it was never a mistake,” he said united the head coach continued. “We have to make a selection. It wasn’t a mistake because I feel I’m doing the best for the team in my way of seeing things.
“The guys who came on the pitch (Amad Diallo and Garnacho) changed the game.”
Amorim has already done it publicly underlined his desire to keep Rashford at United and again insisted that the door remains open to an immediate withdrawal from the squad.
“Of course he is a Manchester United player,” Amorim concluded. “Tomorrow we have training, Marcus Rashford will be there, preparing for the next game, and you will see the selection.”
