Liverpool are now reported to be potential suitors for the transfer of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong before the summer, with a major bid considered likely.
It is known that the Reds are still keen to strengthen in this area of their squad Caught offside sources revealing that Martin Zubimendi remains a targetwhile Adam Wharton is also valued within Anfield.
Liverpool in race to sign world-class Premier League wonderkid!
Another name is now added to the list as a Spanish channel files claims that Liverpool want De Jong to come in and give them a new solution in that position, and could try a major bid to make that happen.
The Netherlands international is a classy player who could be a great signing for a number of top-flight clubs, although it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will be ready to let him go.
Manchester United have also been linked with De Jong on several occasions, most recently on another files report, but until now he has stayed at Barça.
Is Frenkie de Jong right for Liverpool?
De Jong is undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in Europe on his day, but it’s debatable whether he’s really the right fit for Arne Slot’s style of play at Liverpool.
The 27-year-old is very much a product of Ajax and their all-out Dutch style of football, which has also seen him fit in at Camp Nou over the years.
However, he has never been quite like Liverpool, and it remains to be seen whether the Premier League in general might prove a bit too fast and furious for him.
Zubimendi and Wharton are also slightly younger, so would be more long-term investments, while LFC could also do well to consider De Jong’s injury record.
The Dutchman has struggled to stay fit, so it would probably be a bit of a risk to try to build a team around him.
It remains to be seen whether Man United will still be linked with De Jong now that their former manager Erik ten Hag is no longer in charge at Old Trafford, although the club could still likely strengthen their midfield.
