Next year, New Delhi will host the world’s best para-athletes as India hosts the championship for the first time.
The 2025 World Para Athletics Championship will be held in New Delhi.
The Indian capital will host the world’s best para-athletes at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the venue for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
This comes after the Indian Paralympic Committee signed a formal agreement with World Para Athletics to bring the event to the country.
According to The Times of Indiachampionships will cost between £40-50m, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will receive significant improvements, including the installation of a new synthetic track to meet international standards.
There is no official date for the championship yet, but most likely it will take place in November.
“This will be India’s biggest sporting event for para-athletes,” a PCI official told The Times of India. “It will be huge for them. More than 1,000 athletes from around the world will come here to showcase their talent. Last year we hosted the Ball Shooting World Cup in New Delhi and it was a huge success.”
The first world para-athletics championship was held in 1994 in Germany.
World Para Athletics also announced Dubai, Cali, Tunis and Olomouc as the first confirmed Grand Prix for the 2025 season.
On February 10-13, the opening event of the Grand Prix calendar will take place again in the United Arab Emirates.
Colombia and Tunisia meet on May 16-19 and June 16-18 respectively, before the Czech city of Olomouc hosts the only women’s Grand Prix on July 3-5.
