1883— Great Britain’s Walter George ran 52:53 for the 10-mile 10-mile handicap race in London, breaking his pre-IAAF world record of 52:56.5.

1924– Lake View (IL) Prep’s Norma Zilk tied Helen Filkey’s American record of 11.6 for 100 yards at Soldier Field in Chicago.

1961– Steve Machuka’s individual victory led Cornell to the team title at the Octagon Championships in Van Cortlandt, New York.
Park. Machuka was the first Kenyan to run for a US college.

1973– This was the first year that the NCAA had three divisions, with both the Div.II and Div.III championships held on the same day in Wheaton, Illinois.
Individual winner Steve Foster led Ashland College (now University) to the team title as they became the first Div.III champions.
Gary Bentley’s individual victory led South Dakota State to the Div.II title.
Until this year, there was only Div. I and the “College” section were held for the first time in 1958.
