Mateo Retegui transfer: Arsenal face Atalanta

Arsenal continue to show interest Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres but they have also identified the in-form Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui as an alternative.

This has been reported by sources close to the situation Caught offside that Retegui is emerging as something of a Plan B for the Gunners as they look to strengthen up front, with a deal possible if Atalanta receive at least €50m for the Italy international.

Retegui has an impressive record of 11 goals in 12 Serie A games this season, and has also provided three assists, so it’s no surprise that numbers like this are attracting attention.

Arsenal are working on a deal for 30 million euros, wonderful kid!

Atalanta do not want to sell Retegui, but it is understood they will find it hard to say no if the money is right, and €50m is the sort of figure expected to test their resolve.

Whether Arsenal will pay that for the 25-year-old remains to be seen, but he is in excellent form at the moment and looks like someone who could add something to Mikel Arteta’s fightback.

Do Arsenal need a signing like Mateo Retegui to get them back into the title race?

Arsenal are now nine points adrift of Liverpool in the Premier League title race, and while yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Chelsea can hardly be described as a poor result, their recent mistakes against the likes of Bournemouth and Newcastle meant they really needed more than just a point at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal haven’t clicked in attack, and while part of that is down to Martin Odegaard being out injured for much of the campaign, there’s also perhaps a case to be made that he could do with someone to take the pressure off Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka. in the final third.

Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard haven’t been at their best recently, and Retegui looks like he could be a good addition to add some spark to Arteta’s attack.

Arsenal should consider a major January deal to try and improve things, or they will surely struggle to catch up with current pace-setters Liverpool.
