The 35-year-old pro, who has never won and recorded zero top-10s in 2024, shot a five-under 67 to move ahead by one stroke after 18 holes.
Defending the champion Erik van Rooyen also had a great opening day, shooting a 68 to join a large group of players one back at four under.
