DAZN’s Chris Mannix publicly that Lemos weighed in at 144.6 pounds for this morning’s weigh-in, which allowed the fight to go ahead.
Keyshawn proudly boasted to the media this week that he sold more than 10,000 tickets for the event at the Scope Arena. The venue seats 10,253 fans. This is 25-year-old Keyshawn’s first main event, and he’s making a homecoming to fight in front of his fans in Norfolk.
Lemos (29-1, 19 KOs) came in 6.4 pounds over the 135-lb limit at 141.4 pounds at last Thursday’s weigh-in for Friday’s lightweight clash. The Commission reportedly set a rehydration limit of 146 pounds for today that Lemos had to make. Otherwise, the fight would have been canceled regardless of whether Keyshawn wanted the clash to go ahead.
ESPN+ at 10pm Main Card
- Lightweight Keyshawn Davis (11-0, 7 KO) takes on Gustavo Lemos (29-1, 19 KO) in a 10-round contest.
- Middleweight prospect Troy Isley (13-0, 5 KO) hopes to impress against Tyler Howard (20-1, 11 KO) in a 10-round fight. 2020 US Olympian Isley, 26, has struggled since turning pro, narrowly defeating journeyman Vladimir Hernandez last year on November 16, 2023, winning a close eight-round unanimous decision.
- Lightweight prospect Abdullah Mason (15-0, 13 KO) takes on tough veteran Yohan Vasquez (26-5, 21 KO) in an eight-round battle. Top Rank is grooming 20-year-old Mason to be one of their future stars. Of all the fighters on tonight’s card, Mason has the most potential to become a world champion and a future superstar.
- Welterweight prospect Kelvin Davis (13-0, 7 KO), the brother of Keyshawn, will face Yeis Solano (15-3, 10 KO) in an eight-round bout. The lanky 6’1″ slugger Kevin is coming off a narrow eight-round majority decision victory over Kelvin Johnson on July 6, and there are doubts about his ability to be a contender. He lacks his brother Keyshawn’s talent.
In retrospect, Top Rank, the promoters for tonight’s event, mistakenly chose Lemos, a light welterweight (140 pounds), to use as Keyshawn’s opponent rather than selecting someone from the lightweight division (135).
You are asking for trouble as a promoter if you pick fighters from a higher weight class to fight your guys. When it works, it’s great for the fighter you’re trying to build into a star because they get a weight-drained opponent with a name and possibly look better than they really are.
28-year-old Argentinian Lemos is coming off a controversial 12-round unanimous decision loss to Richardson Hitchins on April 6 in Las Vegas. That fight was held at 140 in the light-welterweight division.
