Wanyonyi 1:41.11 WL/DLR, another 5 meeting minutes
LAUSANNE (SUI, August 22). The Athletissima Wanda Diamond League in front of an enthusiastic full house of 13,000+ spectators set seven meet records (including yesterday’s Duplantis), highlighted by the fourth (tied) fastest men’s 800m, DL record. and world leader Emmanuel Vagnoni (1:41.11). The outdoor world leader, surprisingly, also in the women’s 3000m by Diribe Velteji (8:21.50). Three new Olympic champions were defeated, Holloway lost his winning streak, and Jackson and Ingebrigtsen successfully returned to winning ways after the Olympics. Women’s shooting is the first sport to complete all DL qualifiers. The season is going fast, the next DL meet, the Silesian Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, is scheduled for Sunday in Chorzów.
Brief reviews
Women
100 m. Asher-Smith, in better form than in Paris, posted a season best of 10.88 (-0.4) EL to beat Davies (10.97) and Kambundji (11.06).
200 m (non-DL). Victory for Takachi 22.76 (0.5), his second best ever by just 0.05 off his NR, ahead of Vesolli (22.83).
800 m. Moraa took a clear victory in 1:57.91 ahead of Bell (1:58.53) and Rickey (1:58.73).
3000 m. Eisa and Taye dropped out late but their compatriot Gebreselama kept the fast pace (2km/5:38.78) until the final km, resulting in a new MR, PB and outdoor WL of 8:21.50 for Velteji, second Chepngetic (8:23.48) ahead of Gebreselama (8:24.40 PB) and Cranny (8:25.10 PB).
100 m hurdles. Camacho-Quinn was in top form to win in 12.35 (-0.9) ahead of Stark (12.38) and Nugent (12.38).
400 m hurdles. Another Ball win, another 52.25, saw Clayton finish second (53.32) after a strong first half.
High jump. Mahuchich scored a 199 (failed at 203) ahead of Patterson (196 SB), Ollislagers (192) and Honsel (192).
Shooting. Jackson overcame his Olympic failure to produce a season’s best of 20.64, just 4cm off the WL and clearly ahead of Ogunley (19.55) and Mitton (19.52).
4×100 m (non-DL). Great Britain (Usher-Smith, Henry, B. Williams, Hunt) 42.03 MR over Switzerland (42.16 SB) and Holland (42.83).
Men
200 m. New 200m king Tebogo won in 19.64 (0.9), ahead of Knighton (19.78), Kerley (19.86 SB) and Ogando (19.94 SB).
400 m. The Olympic medalists confirmed their form, with Hudson-Smith clocking 43.96 to win over Samukonga (44.06), third Kebinatshipi improving her PB to 44.22.
800 m (not DL). After a fast first lap (49.32), Vanyoni passed Arop in the away stretch to win with the fourth-fastest time and set a DL record of 1:41.11 (tying Kipketer) after Rudisha’s three appearances. Arop finished second (1:41.72) ahead of Tual (1:42.30), Hopel (1:42.63) and Sisk (1:43.48 PB).
1500 m. Ingebrigtsen’s revenge for Paris was complete as he destroyed his American rivals at the finish line to record an MR of 3:27.83. Hawker finished second (3:29.85) ahead of Kessler (3:30.47) with Vermeulen sixth in the new Belgian NR (3:31.74).
110 m hurdles. Broadbell, after a huge finish in the final meters, clocked 13.10 (-0.1) to end Holloway’s (13.14) winning streak.
Long jump. in terms of performance quality, only two 8-meter attempts. But Tentoglu showed his class by finishing 8th on the third jump, then third on his fifth attempt to secure victory on the final jump of the day with an 806 (0.7) ahead of Pinnock’s 801 (-0.2).
Spearman. Peters, still in Olympic form, secured his victory in the final series with an MR of 90.61 (his first 90+ throw since 2022) ahead of Chopra, also improving to sixth.
