‘Losing my mind’: Paul Merson reacts to Man Utd transfer news

Viktor Gyokeres is one of the most admired attacking properties on the market.

It’s fair to say that Ruben Amorim’s agreed move to Old Trafford, replacing Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, will only inspire more speculation about his future.

While a January transfer exit is not anticipated, as far as Sporting CP are concerned, it is hard to imagine interested clubs not taking advantage of the new turbulence at the Estadio José Alvalade.

Only time will tell if the Red Devils will bite the bullet on the Primeira Liga forward.

Paul Merson appears to be somewhat frustrated by the suggestion that United could be plotting a move for the Swede.

“Now they’re talking about bringing in Viktor Gyokeres. That’s what blows my mind, honestly.” wrote the Sky Sports pundit Sportskeeda.

“He was playing for Coventry a while ago and nobody wanted him. Now he goes down, does well and suddenly you have to pay an extra £40-50m for him!

“Imagine if he was still at Coventry and United wanted him? Everyone will be losing their minds.”

While there is a risk that Amorim’s men could miss out on their now former protégé, the Old Trafford outfit are best advised wait until the summer transfer window when Sporting’s stance on his release clause is expected to soften.

Manchester United, it’s worth noting, now hold the lead with the arrival of Ten Hag’s respected successor.

It’s just a question of whether the former Braga boss feels satisfied enough with his attacking options without the need to dip into the winter window.

Ruben Amorim may have to make up his mind quickly given this Arsenal and Chelsea are interested in the Sporting striker.

Should Manchester United sign Gyokeres?

Manchester United have a goalscoring problem, that should be clear from a glance at the Premier League table.

The English top-flight side have scored eight goals in the League in 2024/25, the second-worst rate behind Crystal Palace and Southampton (6).

Rasmus Hojlund (one league goal), while an exciting 21-year-old prospect, remains raw. Furthermore, the pressure on their shoulders is not helped by the fact that Marcus Rashford (one league goal) has yet to rediscover his incredible streak of goal-scoring form in 2022/23.

Perhaps a new head coach, new mindset and tactical tweaks will help get the most out of United’s current squad.

If not, Gyokeres’ 12 goals in nine league games would suggest he should be considered to plug that gap.
