Chelsea vs Newcastle: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Chelsea face Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon just three days before the clubs meet again in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The Blues travel to St James’ Park on Wednesday evening and will be aiming to do so after tasting victory in the weekend’s Premier League clash. After a draw with Nottingham Forest and defeat against Liverpool in their last domestic clashes, Enzo Maresca’s side will be eager to get back to winning ways.

The west Londoners secured a second consecutive Europa League win against Panathinaikos on Thursday, lifting them to the top of the newly expanded 36-team table. A completely changed XI cruised to a 4-1 win, leaving a number of first-team stars well rested at the weekend.

Newcastle’s form has dropped worryingly in recent weeks and it is now four Premier League matches without a win. A goalless draw with Everton before the international break was followed by a disappointing home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last time out. Eddie Howe’s side lost both trips to Stamford Bridge last season but beat the Blues 4-1 at home.

here it is 90 minutes guide to Chelsea vs Newcastle.

Chelsea have no major injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s clash with Newcastle but will name a much-changed side from the side that beat Greece in midweek.

Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana return from their suspensions – the former played against Panathinaikos – and Reece James should return to right-back after making his first start of the season against Liverpool last time out.

Mykhailo Mudryk, Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix impressed in midweek but are unlikely to replace Jadon Sancho, Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer in the starting XI. Enzo Fernandez’s 70-minute start on Thursday means he can only make the bench this weekend.

Chelsea’s predicted line-up against Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Sánchez; James, Fofana, Colwill, Gust; Caicedo, Lavia; Madueke, Palmer, Sancho; Jackson.

Kieran Trippier

Newcastle’s injury problems never seem to go away and the Magpies still lack a wide variety of first-team players. In defence, Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman and Martin Dubravka are all sidelined, although Dan Burn should be fit to play despite picking up a knock against Brighton.

Up front, Callum Wilson’s return has been further delayed after Howe confirmed the England international would miss at least the next three games.

Cobham graduates Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall are likely to face their former employers, while Anthony Gordon features for the first time since signing a new long-term deal with the Magpies.

Predicted Newcastle vs Chelsea line-up (4-3-3): Pope; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Kelly; Joelinton, Guimaraes, Tonali; Gordon, Isaac, Barnes.

Newcastle’s disappointing form in recent weeks does not offer the Magpies much hope of getting a result in the capital. Considering the Blues haven’t won on the road since Papiss Cisse’s memorable brace in 2012, a draw would be a huge result for Howe’s side.

However, with Chelsea fielding a completely changed XI in midweek and featuring some of the most devastating attacking players in the division, they will be legitimate favorites on Sunday. It’s unlikely to be a major win against a spirited Newcastle side, but the Blues should take all three points.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle
