Liverpool should have a penalty after Darwin Nunez’s foul

Arne Slot has only been Liverpool manager for 12 games. That said, it’s fair to say that he’s already experienced his fair share of controversy when it comes to officiating calls.

However, he may not have expected to see his Reds team penalized for poor refereeing in Europe.

The The Dutchman was left furious on the touchline during the 2-1 win against Chelsea as referee John Brooks gave it 50-50 in favor of the Blues.

If the former Feyenoord boss was perplexed by this call, one can only wonder how he will react to terrible VAR decisions in the future!

Mark Goldbridge had no doubts about a call that should have gone the visitors’ way at the Red Bull Arena.

Darwin Núñez had a chance to earn Liverpool another clear goal scoring opportunity after he was shot down in the Leipzig market.

A closer inspection of the images, as shared on X (formerly Twitter) by TNT Sports, appears to show Willi Orban making contact with the No.9’s ankle inside the six-yard box.

The former Benfica striker had taken the ball in front of his man with a neat touch before the incident.

A clear penalty, one might have thought, although a quick VAR check made it clear that no foul had been committed.

Obviously, the commentary team on hand TNT according to Mark Goldbridge: “The rhythm he uses. Just determination. He knows that if he can get something, then he might be cut.

“That’s exactly what happened. He was absolutely not in control there Orban. He wasn’t sure where he was.”

Marco Rose’s men must surely count themselves lucky that Liverpool were denied the chance to double their lead on the stroke of half-time.

The subsequent tie, otherwise, may not have seen the two sides separated by just Darwin Núñez, who blocked Mo Salah’s goal.
