Jordan Smith entered his rookie season on the PGA Tour with one primary goal: play a second season.
“Obviously, my first year here, and we’ve played a lot, we’ve had to play a lot. Just keeping our card this year was our goal,” Smith said after his season round at Colonial. “We’re off to a really good start, which is really nice to see. So, yeah, we’re just going to try to build on that and try to get into some of the playoff events and see what happens.”
The 33-year-old Englishman has played well in his rookie season on the PGA Tour. He has made 10 of 15 cuts and earned a third-place finish at the Valspar Championship in March.
But after rounds of 65 at Colonial, Smith enters the weekend at the Charles Schwab Challenge holding a one-shot lead over Hideki Matsuyama, Brian Harman, Michael Thorbjornsen and Ryan Gerard. He is 36 holes away from a two-year layoff and his first career PGA Tour victory.
But there’s a lot of golf to be played before Smith can call himself a PGA Tour winner.
“It’s going to be a new experience for us being here leading for the first time,” Smith said of playing with the lead on the weekend. “So yeah, I’m excited. I’m just going to stick with what I’ve been doing the last couple of days. Yeah, just see what happens, you’re not going to force anything, I’m not going to rush anything, I’m just going to see what happens and enjoy it.”
