William Zepeda said at the Kickoff press conference in New York today that he wants to see if Shakur Stevenson stands and is fighting against him on July 12 at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens. The unbeaten Zepeda (33-0, 27 CO’s) says he expected Stevenson (23-0, 11 COs) to use to use boxing as he always does, rather than standing and snailing.
Shakur’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, said he wanted the Ring Lightweight title to be at stake for the Stevenson-Zepeda match, making the winner the ‘King of the Division’.
“If this man was from the UK, he would be an absolute superstar,” Eddie Hearn said at today’s press conference and talking about Shakur Stevenson. “I know that the ring belt is vacant. This belt should be on the line for Shakur and William Zepeda on July 12. You will see why Shakur Stevenson is one of the biggest fighters. These are two fighters who deserve to be the king of the division. He must be crowned the king on July 12.
Zepeda: Stand and Fight
“I think on July 12, the world will know who William Zepeda is,” Zepeda said. “I don’t care what Eddie says. I hope Shakur does what he says he’s going to do and stand and fight. Shakur says he stops and fights, let’s stand and fight. We have a plan A and a plan B. He says he will fight with me, but he will have to go back to boxing. “
“I’m coming a performance. I’m coming in to deliver the best achievement of my career,” Shakur said. “He can’t do anything else. He comes in to throw as many bumps as possible and making me tired. He will have the best version of Shakur Stevenson.
“I’m not sleeping on William Zepeda. I have to lock up and walk on him. That’s what I had to do, ‘says Shakur.
“I want to be known as a Mexican legend,” Zepeda said.
“It can’t be. Of course I want the tank fight, but if I don’t get past Zepeda, there’s no tank fight, ‘says Shakur.
