After 128 games, two trophies and countless near misses, Erik ten Hag has finally succeeded he lost his job at Manchester United.
The final nail in the coffin for the divisive Dutch coach proved to be Sunday’s conviction Defeat by 2-1 against West Ham United. After a dominant but wasteful first-half display, Ten Hag’s side wilted in the second half before losing to a highly-controversial stoppage-time penalty.
The collapse in the capital was just the latest in a long string of embarrassing performances for United, who suffered heavy defeats at the hands of Liverpool. Manchester City and many others during the reign of Ten Hag. However, the former Ajax manager also finished third in his debut season while lifting the Carabao Cup, before defeating City in last summer’s FA Cup final.
Given their very contrasting achievements, the instant reaction from fans was mixed.

It’s incredibly unfortunate that another manager has been let go, especially after that first season, I was so convinced we were making progress with Erik, but since August 2023 it’s been downhill if we’re being honest.

Attention quickly turned to Ten Hag’s potential replacement. Former England boss Gareth Southgate was heavily linked last summer distancing themselves of the position this season, while United thought he is interested to Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim, who is also a Manchester City target.
