Women Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) has proposed the removal of the decline of the first flight to improve the competitiveness of the league.
According to the emerging reports of the GuardianThe league governing body can at least temporarily rely on the women’s superly (WSL) until the 2026/27 season. The decision will be associated with a gradual competition expansion to 16 teams in the coming years.
It is said that the proposal was presented to try to “increase the profile, sustainability and profitability of women’s football”.
The reports indicate that the WPLL will hold a vote between the 23 member clubs of the first and second level of England at the end of the season to decide if the controversial measure will be implemented.
The promotion of the women’s championship will continue, with an additional place available each season. Eliminating the relegation and promoting two teams per season will support the WPLL plans to expand the WSL’s number of clubs.
The teams will have the final definition on this topic at a final season meeting, but sources have confirmed that the WPLL will also contact other parties such as players, fans and the football association.
