Giants of Gujarat the outside past UP Warriorz Women By 10 runs in the second match Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 on Saturday at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai.
Gujarat Giants post a massive 207/4 after an explosive batting display
Gujarat Giants displayed a team batting built on aggressive intent and smart partnership. Opener Beth Mooney provided a steady start, hitting 13 off 12 balls before falling to Sophie Ecclestone. The momentum really shifted when Sophie Devine launched a strong counter attack smashing 38 off just 20 deliveries at a strike rate of 190.
Devine found solid support from Anushka Sharma who scored a fluent 44 off 30 balls and ensured that the scoring rate never dipped. Captain Ashleigh Gardner added valuable runs in the death overs with a quick-fire 65, but Georgia Wareham’s final performance, unbeaten on 27, saw her total fall short of 200 runs.
Despite disciplined spells from Sophie and Deepti Sharma, the UP Warriorz struggled to stem the flow of runs, hitting boundaries regularly as the Gujarat Giants maintained a run rate of over 10 throughout the innings.
UP Warriorz fight hard but fall short on runs
Chasing a fearful target 208UP Warriorz Women started on a shaky note, losing Kiran Navgire early. Skipper Meg Lanning anchored the innings with 30 balls, while Phoebe Litchfield kept the chase alive with 78 off 40 balls, hitting an impressive 195.
Litchfield’s partnership with Lanning and Shweta Sehrawat tilted the game briefly in favor of UP Warriorz Women. However, the usual goalkeepers stopped their momentum at crucial moments. Contributions from Shweta Sehrawat (25) and Asha Sobhana’s unbeaten 27 added late drama, but the rate required proved too steep in the final over.
Gujarat Giants showed excellent composure with the ball in the latter stages. Renuka Singh Thakur provided key breakthroughs early on, while Wareham impressed with both wickets and control in the middle innings. Gardner also chipped in with a vital scalp and ensured that the Warriors were never in full control of the chase.
