The second round of UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage matches will take place this week.
Barclays Women’s Super League leaders Manchester City made an impressive start to the tournament last week, beating back-to-back champions Barcelona 2-0.
Chelsea also celebrated their first-leg victory, ending the game with a 3-2 win against Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge. Arsenal, however, did not start with the same. The Gunners were thumped 5-2 by Bayern Munich, who only increased the pressure after a disappointing start to the domestic league.
Outside of the English sides, there were also surprising results. Sweden’s Hammarby, who have reached the group stage of the competition for the first time in their history, put in a stellar performance against St Polten, winning 2-0.
Juventus beat Valerenga 1-0, while FC Twente won comfortably against tournament newcomers Celtic. Eight-time winners Lyon beat Galatasaray 3-0, and Roma also beat Wolfsburg.
The next batch of group stage matches offer all clubs the chance to turn things around, with the potential to reach the knockout stages still a long way off.
