Pegula: The Swiatek case inspires confidence and disappointment
“Hello everyone, I wanted to share a quick update regarding my withdrawal from the Australian Open. Unfortunately, the back injury that bothered me at the end of last season is still not fully healed,” Krejcikova posted on social media social. “It’s really disappointing because I love playing in Melbourne and I have such fond memories of reaching the quarter-finals last year.
“Thank you all for your support. I’m working hard to get back to full health and can’t wait to see you on the field soon!”
World No. 10 Krejcikova, who was scheduled to be seeded 10th at the Australian Open, has not played a match since bowing out Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia last November. Krejcikova submitted the world number 3 Coco Gauff her only defeat en route to her first WTA Finals championship.
Katerina Siniakova and Krejcikova partnered to capture back-to-back Australian Open doubles titles in 2022 and 2023.
Last July, Krejcikova converted her third championship point by defeating Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to capture her first Wimbledon singles championship.
It was the second Grand Slam singles title in three years for 2021 Roland Garros singles and doubles champion Krejcikova and it left her feeling “unbelievable”.
Krejcikova joins former no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and former US Open finalist Karolina Pliskova on retreat from Melbourne.
The 2025 Australian Open main draw is set for January 12-26.
