Punjab Kings (PBKS) fans can breathe a sigh of relief – Lockie Ferguson’s absence in the first half of the game IPL 2026 will not lead to any disciplinary action. The New Zealander, who was set to miss the first seven matches of the season, has taken a leave of absence due to personal reasons and both the franchise and the BCCI are said to support his decision.
Strict rule to miss entire IPL season
Initially, there was confusion due to the strict IPL rule imposed before the 2025 mega auction. Under this rule, any foreign player who opts out after being drafted faces a two-season ban. That’s exactly what happened when England’s Harry Brook pulled out of IPL 2025.
But Ferguson’s situation is very different. He hasn’t completely given up on the tournament – he’s just taken a planned break and will join the squad at the end of the season. As a result, his absence was officially classified as “scheduled leave” rather than a breach of contract.
“He cannot participate in the first seven games” An IPL source told PTI. “Ferguson’s action qualifies as a planned leave for personal reasons rather than a breach of contract or unauthorized attendance, and therefore no sanctions are expected.” he added.
This clarity comes as a huge relief for Punjab Kings, who finished second last season and are looking to build momentum at the start of IPL 2026. Most importantly, the franchise has taken a humanistic approach – recognizing that some things in life are bigger than cricket.

Ferguson favors family as Punjab Kings look for a strong start
The reasoning behind Ferguson’s decision is both simple and heartbreaking. The 34-year-old recently became a father for the first time and wants to spend time with his newborn son and support his partner through this important stage.
Speaking about his choice, Ferguson made it clear that family comes first.
“I’ve just had a little boy; I’m trying to spend as much time as I can at home and help my wife. After that I’ll have a couple of weeks off before I go to the later stages of the IPL and the winter.”
He also spoke about the challenge of finding the right balance between professional commitments and personal life.
“Sometimes the hard part is deciding when to rest. This feels like the right time, especially when my wife was looking after the baby while I was at the World Cup.” he told Cricbuzz.
Despite missing the first half of the tournament, Ferguson has shown encouraging form heading into the IPL. In the recent T20I against South Africa, he delivered an impressive spell, taking 1/9 in four overs along with a three-wicket performance in the previous match. These performances suggest that he will bounce back sharply and be ready for the crucial final stages of the league.
Meanwhile, Punjab Kings owned by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta is not short on options. The franchise has a strong pace attack featuring players like Marco Jansen, Arshdeep Singh, Azmatullah Omarzai, Xavier Bartlett and Ben Dwarshuis. Jansen in particular has been in excellent form and is expected to play a key role in Ferguson’s absence.
PBKS will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 30 in Guwahati. Although they will have to manage without Ferguson at first, the team remains confident in its depth and balance.
