Lonnie Thompson believes the extra weight on which Terence Crawford will pack for his title challenge against the undisputed super -middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez, will blend him, which leads him to lose on September 13. Thompson says the power on Canelo’s shots will carry 37-year-old Crawford further.
Canelo Alvarez’s power benefit
“I think Crawford is good, but if you look at his fight against Madrimov at 154, he gave him problems,” Lonnie Thompson said Pro Boxing fansand about the problems that Terence Crawford has moved from 147 to 154 in his last fight when he barely beat Israil Madrimov in August.
Madrimov gave Crawford a lot of problems and probably beat him last August. The difference in power was striking. Madrimov was much larger puncher and jumped off Crawford’s head all night. This was clear from the struggle of the power of Terence from 154.
“He goes on two different weight classes. Crawford is an excellent boxer, but I think his heart is too big sometimes,” says Thompson. “I think if he gets in a sluggish game with Canelo, it’s going to go bad for him. I can see him eliminate Canelo for five or six rounds. The only thing I’m worried about is the last rounds. ‘
It would be a crazy idea that Bud goes to War with Canelo, because he won’t have enough doll in his blows to suit him. Canelo’s last opponent, IBF champion William Scull, was bigger, stronger, younger and faster than Crawford. He did not want a part of mixing it with Alvarez as soon as he was beaten several times.
Fighting fatigue risk
“After six, when Canelo starts to hit him on the shoulders and hips because you can go up in weight,” Thompson said. “But if you’re used to fighting at a smaller weight, you can put on all the weight, make you tired. It is not as if he took a setup at 168. He went to the Jugular on 168. ‘
Crawford does not want to mix it with Canelo as soon as he is beaten a few times. He is going to take a minimalist approach and try to pass his way to a victory. It will not work against the superstar Canelo because the judges will not make Crawford the decision if he tries to achieve a cheap victory.
“I think if the rounds go on, it can get bad for Crawford because Canelo can hit. He is used to fighting larger bodies. Even though he’s a bum, Berlanga, he’s a big guy. So, with Crawford being a bloated 168, I lean more to Canelo to win, ‘says Lonnie B.
This is not just the size that Crawford will cause problems. This is his age, and he comes another year’s dismissal. He barely got away with his long discharge and one-division weight string in his last fight against Israel Madrimov. Now he goes up two divisions to a 13-month dismissal just before his 38th birthday.
