Romario Shepherd during which he engraved his name in the book of records ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026became the first West Indies player to claim a hat-trick in the competition’s history. The iconic moment took place in the No. 3 match against Scotland at the iconic Eden Gardens on Saturday.
Shepherd’s sensational spell not only thrilled the Kolkata crowd but also played a crucial role in West Indies’ comfortable 35-run win.
Romario Shepherd’s match-clinching hat-trick
Shepherd’s historic hat-trick was Scotland’s 17th in pursuit. Bowling with pace and precision, he dismissed wicketkeeper Matthew Cross, then the dangerous Michael Leask and then Oliver Davidson in three successive deliveries.
The destruction did not end there. Shepherd achieved a remarkable result by dismissing Safyan Sharif for a two-ball duck in the last over and scored four overs to swing the contest in West Indies’ favour.

Shepherd joins elite company in T20 World Cup history
With his hat-trick, Shepherd became the 10th player in T20 World Cup history to achieve the feat. Australian pace legend Brett Lee claimed the hat-trick for the first time in the tournament and set the benchmark in previous editions.
The previous T20 World Cup in 2024 saw three hat-tricks, including two by Australian captain Pat Cummins and one by England’s Chris Jordan. Shepherd’s effort now adds a proud West Indies chapter to that elite list.
Shepherds seal the game for West Indies at five-for-three
Shepherd’s heroics did not end with a hat trick. He claimed five goals, finishing as man of the match. Chasing 183, well placed at 114 for 3 after 13, Scotland completely lost momentum after Shepherd’s explosive spell.
From a competitive position, Scotland collapsed to 147 in just 18.5 overs, unable to recover from the sudden loss of wickets.
At the beginning of the match, West Indies posted a competitive total of 182 for 5 after first being asked to bat. The innings was anchored by Shimron Hetmyer’s ferocious middle innings attack, who smashed a 22-ball half-century.
After a relatively quiet start, the pace of Hetmyer’s counter-attack changed decisively and ensured that West Indies posted enough runs on the scoreboard to apply pressure in the chase.
