Why VAR recommended a Liverpool penalty for Matthijs de Ligt’s handball

The Premier League has confirmed the reason why Matthijs de Ligt was penalized for handball during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

The Dutchman was hit on the arm by Alexis Mac Allister’s header, although referee Michael Oliver opted not to award a penalty despite vociferous appeals from Liverpoolplayers and a stupid home crowd.

Oliver was advised to consult the pitchside monitor to review his decision and, watching the replay, opted to award a penalty – a penalty that Mohamed Salah would send past Andre Onana even though the Cameroonian he achieved his effort.

Confirming the reason for the VAR’s recommendation, a publication in the Premier LeagueUser X’s channel said: “#LIVMUN – 67′ OVERTURN VAR. The VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible handball by De Ligt, considering that his arm was raised in an unnatural position. After reviewing it, the referee overruled lar his original no-penalty call.”

“I think he has the upper hand. I think he could be in trouble is my initial reaction,” he added. Sky Sports said commentator Gary Neville during the match. “I saw it in real time when your hand is up there, we’ll see.

“As soon as your arm is that high in the box, you’re asking for big trouble. Why is his hand there? I don’t know why his hand is there.”

The stain on De Ligt’s notebook will not overshadow what was encouraging performance from Ruben Amorim’s United. The Red Devils were much more organized and assured in possession, with midfielders Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo competing adeptly against Liverpool’s midfield trio of Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch.

Captain Bruno Fernandes also shone in one of his best displays of the season, suggesting United have brighter days ahead after a torrid start to Amorim’s reign. United have moved past West Ham in 13th place with the unexpected point, still some way off the European table in both points and places.
