Cash games with friends are common at every golf course in the country. From the roughest munis to the most pristine country clubs, if you hit the course you’re sure to find some action-packed sets on the line.
Skill levels may vary, but with handicap system, every game can be competitive. You just have to make sure the strokes are straight.
This is where hostility comes in. When you strike, you always want to negotiate for less. And when you’re getting them, you’re always singing for a few more.
Former NFL stars obsessed with golf Patrick Peterson AND Larry Fitzgerald I know this routine well. When the two were teammates on the Arizona Cardinals during the 2010s, they often played together on their off days. the only catch? Fitzgerald always insisted that Peterson hit him.
“I say, ‘Larry, I’m better than you, but I’m not good enough to hit you,'” Peterson said on this week’s episode of GOLF’s Subpar. “Why am I hitting you?”
Peterson explained that as he continued to get the better of Fitzgerald, the subject of strikes kept coming up. Finally, after some negotiations, they reached an agreement.
“We end up playing one time, I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m going to give you your shots in the front. If you win, (you have to) play with your head up,” he said. “We end up playing and I end up beating him. Since then, we’ve never had a money exchange golf match.”
Peterson had only one thing to say to Fitzgerald after that: “Be better.”
