There probably isn’t a golfer on the planet who hasn’t been addicted to looking at some random golf tips on social media. And while mid-handicappers like you or I may be guilty of this, many of us assume that the pros are immune to the pull of online golf instruction.
Well, that’s not necessarily the case – at least for premiership champion Darren Clarke.
In the video below (courtesy of PGA Champions Tour Twitter account), the always entertaining Clarke pokes fun at how she found herself going down the dark hole of golf tips on Instagram. Like any golfer, he not only digested the advice, he then questioned how applicable it really was to himself – driving Clarke into hysterical admission.

Admitting that the video was about “shallowing (the club) and falling”, Clarke said there was a big problem with the instruction – it might not work for a 56-year-old like him.
“The problem with that is, I’m 56, a little too old, and my hips don’t move fast enough,” jokes Clarke. “All little kids can do it, so for some people it works. But for a lot of people, it doesn’t work.”
Clarke admits that trying to emulate what he saw on Instagram just wasn’t going to work for him — but it made him rethink the swing that’s best suited to his frame.

“I’ve always been on top of the golf ball, so when little kids roll their hips and (shallow the club), I can’t do that. I just can’t,” he adds. “For me, it’s more about lifting the club and getting it more in my hands – or, if anything, outside my hands (where the club is parallel to the ground) so I can spin , as I have always been a barrel-chested boy.”
Because of this, Clarke tends to cover the ball by spinning hard down towards the ground – which brings the club out in front of him as it comes through impact – rather than the younger, more flexible players can do with more action. in the hips.
While both methods are functional ways to hit a golf ball, Clarke uses some self-esteem to listen to golfers on social media for swing tips.
“I’m an idiot listening to all these so-called knowledgeable people on Instagram – and a lot of them are – but for me, it just didn’t work, I’m too old,” he says.
