Historically, the target market for Titleist’s line of “1” metal woods has been the slower-swinging player who needs lighter swing weights to help increase clubhead speed.
But now that has changed with Titleist’s new GT1 metal woods. The GT1 fairway wood already has put it in the bag of Titleist personnel Doug Ghim.
On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, Titleist Director of Metalwood Product Development Stephanie Luttrell explained just how versatile GT1 fairway woods can be.
“We’ve now brought CG and frontal adjustment to this model,” said Luttrell. “And part of that was necessary and prompted by our conversations with the Tour. Linking the feedback we have with our Tour team is pretty integral to our R&D process.”
With adjustable flat weights on each model, not only can fitters add weight to bring the GT1 metals to a standard weight setup, but they can also move the heaviest weight to the front to reduce launch and spin. .
Luttrell said that when title director of player promotion JJ Van Wezenbeeck saw the GT1’s large footprint and shallower face depth, he told them he could use it for Tour players.
“Against fairway woods (GT2 and GT3), there are players who are really looking for and getting great performance because of that face depth,” Luttrell said. “And they’re able to get down a little bit more behind him and have ease of departure because of that. So this forward CG adjustment that we’re now bringing to it allows us to really meet the needs of the Tour as well as the needs of that more moderate speed player who needs dynamic loft, launch and spin .”

“I’m just on the war bus with trying to find the optimal launch and spin windows and for playability and going from longer irons now to fairways,” McCormack said. “I’m a player that has historically struggled with a hybrid, but everything a hybrid is supposed to do is what I need. I just have a tendency to miss them a bit further down.”
When McCormack was sorting through a full bag at the Titleist Performance Institute, he was surprised to see a 21-degree GT1 7-wood come out of the drawer to try.
“In testing it, I mean, it was the first shot. And that was the reaction we heard,” McCormack said. “I hit it and just went, ‘Ha!’ This was exactly what I was looking for.”
