Why the survival of this Alister Mackenzie Muni means so much to golf

The sharp golf course in the parkOnly south of San Francisco, has a unique claim for fame. It is the only coastal municipal course in the United States designed by Alister MacKenzie. Also also something of a célèbre cause. Golfists have long been gathering around him.

The layout did not have an easy life. Finished in 1932, the course was shattered by a highway and flooded by the ocean’s flood. Displaced time and maintenance have received their number.

But while a small part of the original holes are lost, much remains much of the work of Mackezie. Its oppression is clear in the deceptive dangers and doglegs artful, and bumps and bumps of the greens and straight roads. With the Pacific waves falling on the background and the windy wind trees that create the bases, the property has a mystical feeling for it. The rural club fills the atmosphere and reflects the price point. Green weekend fees maximum to $ 86.

As it has destroyed the age indignation, Sharp Park has endured its share of controversy. Over the years, environmental groups have driven it to close it, throwing it like a strong blow whose surface would be better in other uses. The courses’ lawyers have been firm in his defense, in legal battles with more moving parts than Jim Fury’s swing.

Of the many defenders of Sharp Park, none have been more active than Richard Harris, a founding member of San Francisco’s Golf Golf alliance. Utah Born and Bay Area grew up, Harris grew up in a middle -class family, but came to an age about the golf kingdom. As a child, he was linked to the Stanford University Golf Course, looking for the likes of Sandy Tatum and Grant Spaeth, both continued to lead USA.

Harris continued to play in Stanford, also a friend of Tom Watson’s cardinal team.

As a Stanford grade, Harris enjoys playing privileges in the educated school course of George Thomas. But he is a muni golf player at his core. His work with the Public Golf alliance SF (a nonprofit, whose mission parallels with its name) underlines that Etos. San Francisco area has a Tough golf sceneand a rich story behind it. But threats to golf Muni – increasing costs, political pressure – are persistent, which makes Harris a busy man.

Among his many tasks, Harris helps organize an annual fundraising tour at Sharp Park. This year’s edition was held last Friday. In the wake of that event, Harris appeared in Golf Podcast for a wide -ranging conversation about his golf life, the value of Golf Muni and why Sharp Park’s survival is much more than the fate of a single course. You can hear the episode here or below. An auction to support Sharp Park will open to the public on November 30, with items including Times Times on a number of Golf Top 100 courses.
