The “interview” part professional club fit is one of the most important parts of my time with a client Real Spec Golf.
This is where I learn their game history, understand where their game stands today, and set goals for where they would like to go. Together, the fitter and player sketch out the current state of their equipment and determine reasonable outcomes for the session.
As you might expect, common goals include greater distance and better distribution. However, what most golfers don’t realize is that these two goals can sometimes work against each other.
The actual value of the carry distance
When I talk about distance, I focus on keep my distancenot the total distance. If my 6-iron carries 150 yards but goes 175, that total doesn’t help much on the course — especially in the tough conditions often seen in competition.
When a player tells me they want better distribution, I challenge them to evaluate North/South (front-back) dispersion as much as East/West (from left to right). As a setter, I learn more from a player’s ability to control their fore-and-aft distances than how tight their shot pattern is around the target line.

Through the bag – from the wedges to the driver – Adequate stopping power is a sign that the device fits correctly. Ball height, spin, shaft profile, swing weight, offset, loft and length all play a role. When a player achieves proper launch and spin, it means they are hitting the ball hard. And there is nothing more important in golf than solid contact – everything good flows from there.
It also matters off the tee
Front-to-back consistency isn’t just for irons. It is equally important when you install a driver. I understand the desire to pursue distance, especially in a suitable environmentbut it can be fool’s gold to prioritize the longest ride you’ve ever had over the setup that produces repeatable distance and consistent hitting.
Consider this example: Player A and Player B have identical swing speeds, attack angles, and club paths. Player A chooses the driver who produced his two longest drives MOUNTING — but also his shortest. It required extra effort to hit well. Player B chooses the setup that feels easy to swing and keeps his drives five feet apart, even though his longest putt wasn’t that far.
Both players hit the driver about ten times in the round. Player A beats Player B twice – but these are also the only two paths he hits. Player B finds eight out of ten paths. Over the course of a season, who is likely to enjoy the game more?
Maybe player B.
