at $549, Odyssey’s new S2S Tri-Hot the paws are the company’s most expensive options in their retail line at at least $50 and some of the most expensive retail gear they’ve ever released.
So naturally, there are always critics who complain about putting such expensive equipment.
But on last week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, Callaway Tour Content Manager Johnny Thompson explained why the equipment is so expensive and why you should see for yourself if the performance gains are worth it.
The S2S Tri-Hot wheels have a new front axle placement for a low-torque thruster which allows it to set up much more like a conventional shooter without significant start or any weak shafts. This was achieved through the use of a lightweight aluminum piece and 140 grams of tungsten in the front end to move the CG forward.
Odyssey Tri-Hot Square 2 Square #7 Custom Putter
We’ve moved Zero Torque forward. Odyssey’s new line of S2S TRI-HOT gauges is a revolution in the Zero Torque category. By using multi-material construction, we’ve been able to move the CG of these rigs far enough forward to get the shaft into the head on the topline, eliminating the need for shaft ligation and thus eliminating one of the biggest barriers to entry for this style of casting. Forward CG and Hose Position By moving the CG forward, we were able to position the hose spud on the top line, much closer to the face than typical Zero Torque setters for a more natural, intuitive and comfortable installation position. Multi-Material Construction By strategically using aluminum, steel and over 140 grams of tungsten, we’ve been able to design a “Zero Torque” gauge with more than 80% of its weight below the topline and allowing for our forward CG position and hose. New FRD Groove This new Forward Roll design groove is deeper and more aggressive. With a 19° slope it works together with the two-layer design to improve forward rotation up and down the face.

“The amount of technology that’s involved and for them to make it not have slack axle and not start and be, in a sense, like a traditional center axle setup, like it requires expensive raw materials that just cost a lot,” Thompson said. “One hundred and forty grams of tungsten is very expensive.
“And then molding it into a, you know, something that can put an insert like everybody else, it’s expensive.”
Thompson explained that the Odyssey isn’t trying to move away from its more consumer-friendly price points that the brand has become known for over the years, but the benefits may make the price worth it.
“Like we don’t expect everyone to run out and buy the Square2Square Tri-Hot. We get it, but it’s a premium product,” he added. “We hope they can see that. And you know, I tell people, I said, ‘Hey, you’re going to make more shots.’ That means you’re going to win a few more skins, but you’re going to win a few more bets. It’s all going to even out.”
