Why fitters matter more than ever with TaylorMade’s Qi4D

The possibilities are endless when it comes to the TaylorMade Qi4D driverso you better know what you are doing when you are trying to find your right environment.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-host Johnny Wunder explained how much he learned about the driver behind a fit with TaylorMade Tour representative Adrian Rietveld.

“These Qi4D heads are very nuanced and I have to say that now,” said Wunder. “You can screw up that head if you don’t know what you’re doing.
And I’ve said that several times on this podcast, and just in the video, because you’re moving so much weight, you really have to know.”

With the 12 settings on TaylorMade’s FCT loft sleeve and the four interchangeable weights that come with two 4g weights and two 9g weights, there are 128 combinations with just the stock weights and standard loft sleeves. This is not the case with the other two loft sleeves (1.5˚ and 1.0˚) available for TaylorMade’s tour fitters.

With so many options, the onus is on fitters now more than ever to really be able to unlock the Qi4D driver.

“You really have to be a master at working with that much weight to move and be able to figure out the different TaylorMade FCT sleeves that they have,” Wunder said. “So those drivers, I think as they go along, I think the best fitters, your True Specs, your Club Champions, your cool clubs, some of the fitters at Golf Galaxy, the PGA Tour Superstore, your top-level fitters, your active fitters. By the time we get to the summer, everybody will have figured it out.”

Wunder said that his initial testing of the TaylorMade line with Charles Howell III, he was struggling to find the face because neither he nor Wunder really understood how to move the weight properly to set it up.

But after Wunder adjusted to Rietveld, he could help him a little better.

“I said, ‘Hey, look, why don’t you take all the weight, the back nine and the front four, switch them, set it to 10.5, and then move the lie straight,'” Wunder said. “Because that’s what Adrian did with me and I had the same problem with QI4D that Charlie was. I was having a hard time finding the right part of the face to optimize the numbers.
