Richard Green, after a gentle shrug, says the three words everyone wants to say when it comes to the golf club.
“Hey, it works.”
And hey, they really do. This weekend, in Charles Schwab Cup Championshipthe season-ending event for the PGA Tour Champions, Green shot even-par rounds of 71, 68, 63 and 65 at Phoenix Country Club to tie for second, falling short of victory no. 1 in the county’s 50 and up.
But then Green gives you a look in his golf bag.
Are those … 2004 Nike cuffs? It didn’t have the Swoosh band announced in 2016 that they were leaving the club game?
And is that … a Titleist 913 hybrid? Haven’t they been around? for a decade?
Green then brings out a shooter.
It’s a Ping Anser 2 that he thinks he got in … 1984.
But why? Isn’t the latest device the greatest device? it depends In short, go back to those three words in the second paragraph. “Hey, it works.”
Through a video from the Champions social media teamGreen expanded his choices. First, the irons.
“I’ve had these since probably around 2004 in a box, and I took them out of the box in 2019 and started using them,” said the 53-year-old from Australia. “I like the feel of them. I’ve always been good at blades. You know, I’ve found a company that has some of these to make some more for me, and I’m waiting on another set, so it’ll be really cool to see when they come. You know, they have little life left.
“My 9-iron is probably the most worn. You know, there’s a little wear on the face there. Took some Tiger (Woods) place. I could do it too.”
And the hybrid?
“I have an old hybrid that’s a 913, I think it is,” Green said in the video. “A hybrid that has worked very well for me over the years. I’m not really sure what the pivot is…but it works. Steve Stricker uses the same setup – it also has a hybrid, same axle. So, you know, it works for us. Really, really good club, you know that kind of 220-yard range.”
What about the shooter?
Green said he thinks he was 6 or so when he first saw it at a pro shop, told his dad he wanted it and eventually got it. At Charles Schwab, he appeared to use a different putter during tournament play, but spoke glowingly about the blade he took out of his bag in the Champions video.
“Even though it’s an old barrel, you know, I’ve been using it for quite a long time now, I’ve done some really good pressure things with it,” Green said. “You know it’s a shooter that gets me more and lets my subconscious go with the putt. I don’t align the impeller. I don’t try to line up the pusher with a line. I just put the putter behind the ball and figure out what I have to do with the ball. And for me, this is the art of deployment. You know, if you can do that well and read the shots well, it doesn’t matter what you send it down the line with, as long as it goes down that line. So this is a favorite for me. You know, I think it’s from 1984 or something.
“It’s an old-school sports car, but you know, hey, it works.”
