Just because you use a certain type of club in a pattern, doesn’t mean you will use it same type of club with a different model or brand.
Fully Equipped co-host Kris McCormack had that experience testing Bridgestone’s new 200-series irons.
Bridgestone Golf announced their first golf clubs in five years — 220 MB, 221 CB and 222 CB+, along with two forged wedges — earlier this week and on this week’s Fully Equipped podcast, McCormack, a 2 handicap golfer, revealed that he tested the irons and surprisingly found the results best with 220 MB.
I was even surprising myself with how consistent that ball flight was, because I don’t consider myself a good ball hitter by today’s standards, but I’d say I’m better than average for the iron game, but I’m not going to the phone yourself well. And that UK was great,” McCormack told co-host Wadeh Maroun.
McCormack has regularly played a split set of hollow back irons, so finding real success with a muscle back set caught him by surprise. But the interesting thing is that the group that McCormack uses has short forged irons and long cast iron. He makes the split behind the 6-iron, the same iron he was testing on Bridgestone’s counterfeit product.
Maroun wanted to learn more about the difference in feel between the new Cubs and McCormack’s current group where he has Ping i230 long cuffs.
“Feel wise, definitely a little more responsive, more feedback. I had a little more control with the Bridgestone in terms of shaping the shots,” McCormack said. “The thing I noticed was the 230 for me, higher launch, a little higher spin, so it definitely gave me more control and stopping power entering the green.
“But the Bridgestone, I was really, really happy with the look, the sound, the feel. Would I put it in my bag? Definitely needs more testing outside just to see what the terrain interaction looks like. But it checks all the boxes in the bay for the numbers I’d ideally be looking for. I just haven’t had a chance to take them to the golf course yet.”
