Who should the Red Sox target this offseason?

The Red Sox have been pretty disappointing the past few years, making the playoffs just once since 2020. They’ve been consistently below .500, finishing the year with a perfect 81-81 record shake things up as the Sox faithful begin to grow restless with the mediocrity that has been on display at Fenway over the past few seasons.. Fortunately, the organization has one of the best farm systems in baseball and some cash to spend this offseason.Let’s dive into some potential moves they could make.

Juan Soto, OF, 26 years old

The best player available in this free agency is Juan Soto, who is officially an unrestricted free agent after a monster season in the Bronx in 2024. The Red Sox are currently projected to make $110 million in 2025 under the competitive balance tax, and while they may have the means to acquire a player of Soto’s stature, recent trends in the front office and ownership in law may suggest that they will not want to pay as much as, say, Steve Cohen and Mets. However, if there was a time to do it, that time would be now. The Sox are on the verge of entering their first championship window in recent memory, when they debut a quarterback of Roman Anthony, Christian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Thiel in 2025. : Adding one of the best players in the world to this group could open up a world of possibilities.

Corbin Burnes, RHP, 30 years old

Burns, a former member of the Baltimore Orioles, fits the Red Sox’s strong push to acquire a true ace this offseason. : Burns would be a great fit at Fenway as he kept the ball on the ground at a 48.8 rate last year. While things have seen some minor setbacks in recent years, it’s still certainly enough quality to put him at the top of this Red Sox rotation. : A front loaded shorter trade is the right price to pay for Burns with the above regressions.

Garrett Crochet (via trade), LHP, 25 yrs

The Red Sox have been one of many teams linked to the White Sox this season. In his first season as a starter, Crochet posted a consistent 1.07 WHIP in 146 innings.A true power pitcher, Crochet almost exclusively bowls fastballs, alternating between his four-seamer and cutter.Though this doesn’t line up too neatly with Red With the Sox’s philosophy of throwing minimal fastballs, Crochet’s fastball is comfortably a special pitch and has shown that it can limit damage and pick up whiffs with great success. The White Sox are rumored to be targeting Wilyer Abreau- Abreo had a good campaign in 2024, but with Roman Anthony more than likely going to Boston next year, I’m totally comfortable. would give him up to get Crochet. Boston has what some might call an embarrassment of riches in their farm system, and now may be the time to unload some of it to make a real playoff push in 2025.

Nathan Eovaldi, RHP, 34 years old

While Eovaldi may not meet ace standards, his addition to the outfield could add some much-needed depth in 2025. Like Burns, Eovaldi does a great job of keeping the ball on the ground and away from the Monster. While he’s older, his performance and stuff have remained pretty sharp over the past few years. He was 12-8 with a 3.80 ERA and a solid .291 wOBA.He limits the damage and keeps the ball out of the air , two necessary traits to have when pitching at Fenway Park.Eovaldi was a member of the Red Sox before when he played a major role In a World Series win in 2018. Fans would love to see him in Boston and he would be a really solid pickup for the rotation.

Willie Adames, SS, 29 years old

Adames is one of my personal favorite players available this offseason and will fill a hole in left field for Boston.Last year with the Brewers, Adames hit a triple slash of .251/.331/.462 with 32 home runs and 21 home runs. with stolen bases. Most of his swings produce fly balls, and he makes it to the pull side 43.9% of the time. with speed. Both of these should bring him success with the shortstop.Defensively, Adames has played well for the Brewers in 2023.However, he noted is willing to play third as well. If the Sox want to stick with Story at short and Campbell at second, Adames could easily slide to the hot corner and take over for Rafael Devers, who struggles with the glove. The added positional versatility and offensive explosiveness should entice the Red Sox front office and hopefully be enough for them to get a deal done.
