If you’re in the market for a new set of clubs, there are many decisions to make. First: What kind of player are you? Are you a higher handicapper looking for clubs with maximum forgiveness, or a single digit player looking for superior feel and response? Are you brand loyal or are you open to testing a variety of models to find the right one for you?
And even after you know exactly which brand you plan to put on the bag, there are other important customization decisions to make. Graphite or steel shafts? How much do you bend? The list goes on!
As you browse the available options, you may come across other descriptors you’re unsure about: namely, cast vs. forged irons. What do these terms mean and how can you decide which one is best for your game? I asked Marc Roybal of True Spec to weigh in.
“The difference between cast iron and forged iron is the manufacturing process,” he said. “Forged golf clubs are made from a single sheet of metal and hammered or stamped into shape. Cast clubs are made from liquid metal poured into a mold.”
And what does this mean from a performance perspective?
“There’s not one specific player that benefits from either,” Roybal said. “Historically, forged golf clubs were primarily for elite golfers. As manufacturing processes have improved, there are now many forged golf clubs that fit higher handicap players.”
So when it comes to choosing clubs for your game, what’s the best way to decide between forged and forged options?
“There is no right or wrong to this question,” Roybal said. “There are many cast and forged irons and wedges that work for every level of player. In general, a forged golf club will give a softer feel, while the shaft may feel firmer.”
With that in mind, the best way to decide is to test drive a few different models to see which ones you prefer. Check out some popular cast iron and wrought iron options below.
