Welcome to TOP 100 GOLF TEACHERS roundtable, where some of the best instructors in the business answer the game’s most pressing questions. The purpose? To help your game and lower your scores ASAP.
The off-season is always a bit depressing for golfers, but it can also be productive. As long as you know what to work on, the offseason can be a time when you get better for the upcoming season.
One of the best ways to use your time – in my opinion – is by increasing your movement speed. If you can gain some speed before next season, you’ll come out of the winter a whole new golfer.
So what are the best ways to get up to speed this offseason? We asked a panel of 100 top teachers and their answers are listed below.
1. Use a training aid
The best way to increase speed is by using training tools like The Stack. After your baseline test, you’ll have a custom program built for you in the app to determine how much weight to move, how often, and when to rest. It is the gold standard in speed improvement. — Dr. Alison Curdt
2. Train like a runner
The best way to increase swing speed in the off-season is to train like a sprinter. Sprinters run downhill to feel what it’s like to run faster. You can do the same in golf. After you’ve warmed up (but before you’re tired), set aside 10–15 balls in the middle of your session and focus on swinging as fast as possible, making the loudest noise you can to get the ball through. Most players already have speed on the move, it’s just in the wrong place, either in front or on the ball. The speed of the drill behind the ball ensures that the club moves quickly through the shot. It doesn’t matter where the ball goes; the goal is to feel what it’s like to swing faster so, over time, you actually do.
3. Get fit
Enter the gym with a fitness plan. Combine that with speed training through a system like HiiTS and you’ll be well on your way to picking up some speed over the winter. – Jason Carbone
