Jj Spaun set the early rhythm in Oakmont with a 66 without Bogey, while former leading champions such as Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott posted their regular rounds. Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler tournament favorites, Rory Mcilroy AND Bryson dechambeau tried to guard every moment during their opening rounds. That is to say, what was the biggest surprise on day 1 in US Open?
Josh Sens, elderly writer (@Jossens) :: I didn’t have a 3-top round from Scheffler to my Bingo card. But the most interesting surprise came from Mcilroy, or I have to say surprises. First: the hot start when it would have been mainly written by pre-Turne experts. And then the coil that sent it from minus 2 to plus 4 for the day. Interesting course. Interesting player. Funny things happen when you bring them together.
Dylan Dothier, old writer (@dylan_Dethier) :: Scottie was such a heavy favorite before the tournament that I think many people were expecting him to get into the mix and stay in the mix of his first bird, who came to no. 2. He still defeated the average of the field and, at the same time, is a lot in this golf tournament. But he will have to capture some very good players if he does two degrees in a row.
Zephyr Melton, Assistant Editor (@Zephyrmelton) :: It should be JJ spaun surrounded without bogey, right? The traveler has been going through a strong year, but the joining of a clean cardboard in Oakmont on a day when so many stars (Rory, Scottie, Bryson, etc.) shot in the rounds on money is some serious impressive things. Make a bow, Mr. Spaun.
Nick Pastowski, high editor (@nickpia)): I will go with brooks koepka. Or maybe it should be surprising that we suspected the koepka. But the big winner had shown the right form this year in Liv Golf-33, tie for seven, tie for 35, second, 18th tie, tie for the 30th, 17th tie and 33-tie-and he lost cutting in Masters and PGA Championship. Then he came out and fired a two-nine-nine year, and we should have known him better: this is a great, and he is a big Brooks.
Josh Schrock, editor of associate news (@Schrock_and_Awe) :: The light answer is the round without forgiveness of spaun, but I think I’m with Nick in this. Brooks has been Mia from the diploma since his victory in the PGA 2023 championship. In last month’s PGA championship, he shot 75-76 to lose cutting from a mile. His only fireworks came when he invited a heckler to come and say something on his face. Based on his oppressor after the round, Koepka has some of his cheat back this week. The Oakmont test will perfectly fit the killer-killer killer-killer killer-killer. I’m interested in seeing which version of brooks appears over the next three rounds.
