The Ryder Cup is the largest spectacle in Golf. It’s big. Walker Cup (I’m here to say ya!) It can become the final of NCAA men’s basketball if it were to play its cards properly. It can also be great. The biggest is not always better except when it is.
What makes Ryder Cup special is something that European teams always seem to understand, and American teams seem to be more confused: being for nothing, these Ryder glasses are about everything. That is, all we want for the sport. Golf has no other global US v. Them. Ryder cup fills a gap.
The presidents’ cup may have it, but the international team is not so strong, most of the years, for anyone to take care. Walker cup faces the same dilemma. (US Runs the series On the UK and Ireland, 39-9-1.) The President’s Cup is very derivative. It started as a JV event and remains there. If you pull the outlet, there would be no unrest.
The four major events in Golf are masters, Ryder Cup, British Open and US Open. PGA Championship (I believe) should recreate. The Walker Cup has nothing but upside down. Maybe one day could be played in Augusta National. The first High PGA championship was played there in 1937 and was destroying success. Augusta’s national amateur is also.
Masters are an annual mid -April tea holiday. She attracts a massive and global look, but has never lost her tea party appeal. Good ways are a fundamental part of the golf. SH.BA and the British open are two real Golf championships, but they are made by and for golf players in the bone. They are not spectacles and do not need to be. Ryder cup is.

Ryder Cup’s Sunday is a night fighting night with 12 periods on the card. You don’t have to know a lot about golf to fall into the magic of Ryder Cup Golf. All you need to know is this story of origin: Europeans invented golf and in that sense they possess it, the aboriginal version of the game. True game. Americans turned the golf into a science, a symbol of business and status. We recreate it, and we possess this version of modern game life. So there is a lot of discussion, even if none of this message makes air waves. The tension is in the air.
If Ryder Cup Golf were essentially for money, he would lose his appeal. The reason the European team is more liked than the US team is because the European act (and likely to have) less right than American players and never Talk about playing for anything other than pride. The reason the US team creates such a passion is that we have had Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus, Watson and Woods with American uniforms. We have had the best of the best. You cannot name a fifty of the modern era of European players who can even smell that American gang of five children. Only for this reason, Europeans will always be submissive. They play it well, though for years now they have been overload.
The reason the Super Bowl is the Super Bowl is because the “big game” (as every Hollywood scenario refers to it) has nothing to do with cash control players. They are being paid. (You get a bonus of $ 171,000 just to be in the big game.) But if the money is a big job for players, we never hear about it. It is not. The movie “Anydo on Sunday, directed by Oliver Stone, does a tremendous job to capture the oxygen that every world class athlete breathes: the obsessive desire to win, to overwhelm one person or another team. Roger Federer never showed him, but it was there, and we loved him for him.
Tiger Woods couldn’t NO Show it. We were glued to every gesture of him because of him. Tiger wanted what Roger had, but he did not get up that way. Roger is essentially European. It was a tea holiday. Super Bowl is a party party, traded with such savagery we are powerless in front of his sales team. Ryder cup, almost the same. Gambling, often for small amounts, many figures in the interest of the Super Bowl. Ryder cup, too, though not at the same level. You do not hear about the Ryder Cup betting office pools. Of course, who goes to an office anymore? But the essential, essential thing is athletes themselves, football players, players’ players. We care because they care. They do not know who will win ahead of time, nor do we. Theater our intense interest follows their strong interest, and our intense interest nourishes their strong interest. Is a perfect passion storm.
A Ryder cup contains some of the best players in the world, but not all. You don’t have it in the Walker Cup due to 39-9-1, we A. who can change with some pen strokes. Instead of us v. GB & I, make the Walker Cup United States against world. Create a point system in which players make their teams based on their game in big championships and big amateur events. Make team captains come from professional ranks, or even other sports. The Walker Cup can become the Golf version in the Men’s Basketball Final NCAA, the end of March’s madness, always held Monday in front of the masters.
Random fans do not know the names of those college basketball players. But we know Indiana. Ucla. Duke. St. John.
As golf teams in professional golf, we know what it means to have a radical interest in Europe, or a radical interest in the United States. The biggest golf show is over us.
