What is a sand in Golf?
A sand (or sandie) is a popular golf bet. Sandy is given to a player who makes par or better in a hole after hitting their ball in a Greenside bunker. To be qualified, you need:
- Hit your shot in a bunker (usually about green)
- Get out of the sand and over the green
- Wrap the hole with par or better
For example, if you find the bunker in your second shooting in a Par-4, hit the ball from the sand and put the putt to save par, just score a sand.
How much is a sand?
Sandies reward great recovery and short game skills. They mainly add excitement (and pressure) to bunker shots that can otherwise be terrified. Usually, the group agrees on a fixed amount for sand. Many times, it’s $ 1 or $ 5 and pays at the end of the round.
Which other side games can you play?
If you are playing with a group that likes to spice things, sandies often combine with other golf side games. If you play only Sandies, you can find them all more or less thirsty to hit their shots at the Greenside bunker!
Bun -A Greenie is usually played only in par-3s. To win the Greenie, you need to be the first player to lower your ball to green in the regulation (usually with your goal shot in a par-3) and be closer to the pin between the group. Some groups also require you to make par or better to ask the price.
Bird bird – a simple one: make a bird, win the pot. Some groups collect a pool of birds and divide it among all the birds made that day. Others pay a certain amount for each bird.

Czech – Chip from outside green for par or better. It doesn’t matter how you got there. If the ball leaves the ground from the green and falls inside, this is a chippy.
