Borussia Dortmund secured a 2-0 win at Werder Bremen to consolidate second place in the Bundesliga, with Serhou Guirassy and Yannik Couto finding the back of the net.
Borussia Dortmund traveled to the Weserstadion on May 16 with clear ambitions. The visitors finished second in the table with 70 points from 33 games. Werder Bremen, meanwhile, were in 15th place with just 32 points and needed wins to avoid relegation trouble. The form favored Dortmund significantly going into this contest.
The first half developed as a tactical battle between the two sides. Bremen controlled possession with 51 percent possession, but struggled to create clear cut opportunities. Dortmund remained patient and dangerous on the counter-attack. The defensive shape of the visitors proved difficult to break down.
Chances remained few and far between in the first 45 minutes. Bremen registered three shots on goal, but did not seriously test the Dortmund goalkeeper. The home team’s offensive game lacked precision and cutting edge. Dortmund’s defence, led by Nico Schlotterbeck and Waldemar Anton, held firm throughout the period.
The visitors created more threatening moments as the half progressed. Serhou Guirassy showed his quality with a smart move in the final third. However, clear opportunities proved elusive for both teams. The half ended scoreless, setting up an intriguing second period.
Dortmund came out with more intensity after the break. The tactical focus shifted to a more direct attacking game. Bremen’s defense was facing increasing pressure as the visitors pressed further up the pitch.
The breakthrough came in the 59th minute when Guirassy struck. The striker finished clinically after a good build-up game with Dortmund’s midfield. Guirassy’s goal settled the game and gave the visitors a breather. Bremen responded with greater attacking intent, but found Dortmund’s backline resolute.
The home side pressed for an equalizer during the final phase. Marco Grüll came off the bench to bring fresh energy to Bremen’s attack. Dortmund goalkeeper Mio Backhaus made crucial saves to maintain the lead. His seven saves were vital in maintaining the lead.
Yannik Couto sealed the result in stoppage time with a second goal. The goal came in the 90+5th minute, effectively ending Bremen’s hopes. Couto’s finish capped off a dominant second-half display from the visitors. Dortmund controlled the game from that point on.
The statistics revealed Dortmund’s superiority. The visitors managed a total of 16 shots with eight on target. Bremen managed nine shots with just three on target. Dortmund’s expected goals stood at 2.53 compared to Bremen’s 0.42. The two teams matched passing accuracy at 85 percent.
This win strengthens Dortmund’s grip on second place in the Bundesliga standings. The team is still on the way to qualifying for the Champions League. Bremen’s struggles continue as relegation concerns grow with just two games to play. The gap between these sides reflects their contrasting seasons.
