Per Frank Bay: It was a decent weekend of boxing. No big names, but many fights from all over the world to keep boxing fans saturated before his traditionally biggest weekend of the year, Cinco de Mayo.
When size matters
Richard Torrez jr. Is an average heavyweight. This is what I learned from his somewhat ugly struggle against Guido Vianello. With the right matchmaking, Torrez can end with ‘Ne -mail belt if the top -rank can lead him another year or so and the older statesmen can wait usyk, Johsua and Fury.
I base this analysis on my barometer on how to judge a fighter. What should have happened if Torrez was the cream of the crop? He should have gone through butter through a contender for a fringe benefit.
If a fighter is very much designated, what fans expect. But when we see a prospect, red flags are lifted. I understand the process, but it is just a common sense to make the assessment that if Torrez struggles with Fighter C, it will be just so much harder if he walks to Fighter B.
Vianello is not a cake step, but he is nowhere near the talent that the top contenders at this moment are like Joseph Parker or Agit Kabayel. The top rank will have to place the brakes on Torrez in the same way they did with Baby Anderson after facing former champion Martin.
Torrez would suffer the same fate as Jared Anderson if he chose to ignore the advice of the top rank and fight against a man like Martin Bakole. Torrez seems to have enough self -awareness to understand his talent and take the advice of top rank.
The grades-
Apart from the obvious, Torrez’s small length and weight, he is very uncomfortable. Torrez’s biggest strike is that he does not have fluidity. His constant struggle and telegraph of bumps will eventually flatten him. He still fights at an amateur rate.
He constantly bounces and maybe what a feint can be called, but his lack of skill just makes him look like a man doing the Booga Loo. Only his head doesn’t move, so it just makes him look like a boy of the 8th class trying to dance during his first dance. To put it blunt, it looks ugly.
Torrez will have to learn how to move comfortably and grace around the ring to set up his push. Even I could see his blows coming. The positive takeaway is that Torrez is a tough fighter. He showed heart and chin against the much larger man. He fought through all the embrace of Vianello and was able to tread him a few times.
I would give Torrez stamina a c-. He will have to find a way to improve it, because he seems to have drastically faded into the piece. I realize that much of this is because he was weighed by much larger men, a tactic used by Lennox Lewis and Fury, but I think that a start is to avoid as much as possible.
The last good thing I saw in Torrez is that he has decent pop, and the fans love him. He seems to enjoy hosting a show and likes to communicate with his fans. My last opinion is that if I was Torrez, I would consider getting a top trainer working with swords. Torrez is trained by his father, but I have not yet seen a gram of improvement in a year of watching him.
A new coach can help Torrez set up his bumps more comfortably. Now, for the most important degree: Warability. Torrez is a b-. Torrez will throw bumps and be there to hit, making him fan -friendly. It must be nice to see how he goes on.
When reality meets hype
On the map, Abdullah Mason was also severely overheated. And if I learned something from Torrez’s struggle, I learned nothing from the incredible birthday victory of Mason (put in eye roll -sarcasm).
I am sorry, but it is painfully obvious that Top Rank Mason put in a sea street after the terror they suffered when he was beheaded by Yohan Vasquez almost two fights ago. Even an uneducated, comfortable boxer could see that Mason was 3 times as large as Ornelas.
Something that the ESPN announced, by the way, overlooked: Mason looked like a middleweight that was fully hydrated after the fight. How do we know this, do you ask? At first, I noticed that Mason was extremely dry and lacked in his blows.
These are signs of a fighter who kills themselves to make weight. In a little surprise, Tim Bradley also noticed in the first few rounds that Mason was not his usual self. The other painfully obvious thing that paved the announcement team by the way was that Ornelas was a 126 -pound career career.
ESPN/Top rank should do something about the powerful worthy glass that Tim Bradley does for his guys. I realize that he is good friends with Keyshawn Davis and Mason outside the ring, but it is angry that we are supposed to pretend to be an objective observer if he has a Hoot and hollow as Mason a somewhat decent punch. It would be tolerant if Bradley was honest that Ornelas was a fighter who showed up two weight classes to make Mason look like a mini-mike Tyson.
The grades-
For this battle there is no one, because it was similar to a soldier who looks like commando in a simulation, as opposed to real live bullets. Does he do good things in the ring? Of course, but I can look like Sugar Ray Leonard against a punch bag. Mason, of course, has all the athletic gifts, but it’s boxing, not a triathlon.
Mason’s chin will be his downfall when and if he fights against a lively dog. I’m just not prepared to buy a ton of stock in him now. Mason does get a B for caring. He looks willing to mix it and not be content to run and hold on like his peer, Shakur Stevenson.
Hood-chop or oblique?
Another significant prospect of the map coming from RGBA (coach Robert Garcia’s gym) was a fighter who goes through Chop-Chop Gonzalez. Gonzalez has a sellable back story. Chop Chop fights at 126 is a good prospect, but he was put to the test. He fought against an additional contender that challenged him badly.
Chop-chop looked good, but not good. The ESPN announcement team had it closer than me. I felt that Chop-Chop had done great body work overlooked by Bradley and Company. The frustrating aspect of watching and listening to Bradley is how obvious he is when commenting. He influenced viewers that Coolwell may have won the battle.
The prejudice plays a role when the obvious hood-chop was in a real battle. Coolwell let Bruce Carrington go the distance. Where Bradley is too critical of Chop-Chop acting in class, he in turn has a love festival for Mason facing a real suitcase. While Mason is fighting 3x smaller, Chop-chop is fighting a man much bigger than him.
The degree-
I have to give him a C+. He achieved the decisive victory in a more difficult than expected match. A-body work, but defense gets a D. chop-chop is very muscular for these smaller weight classes. And like Torrez, it lends to a lack of skill, making him a sitting target.
He seems to try to give corners like Bam Rodriguez, but it just looks uncomfortable because he doesn’t have the fluidity of Bam. He doesn’t have his feet to pull it off. Chop-chop gets a b-to power. The push sounds loud, but I didn’t see Coolwell too worried.
At 126, the top of the class, such as Espinoza and Fulton, can take it and tighten it. In the future, Chop-Chop will have to work on a tight stitch and get better in pace and head movement. Chop-chop likes to put a little too much on his shots.
We know this, because Coolwell could also see that it was coming. Coolwell got better with the observation when Chop-Chop was picking up and getting out of the way. The top rank would be wise to bring chop-chop slowly.
A better mover than Coolwell might have beaten Gonzalez. Nevertheless, he passed the test and he had a little talent, but needed a little more seasoning. He gets an A-in watchability. Chop-chop is a must-see TV. If he acts in class, the wars will come soon.
Aussie fans forgiving
And finally, Timmy Tszyu. It was impressive to see the crowd and excitement in the country under for Tszyu, but that’s where it ends. I am a fan of Tszyu, I rooted him against Jermell Charlo for undisputed, but me how the times change.
My only thought look up to this battle Prime video I was, I feel sorry for the Australian fans who charged PPV for this garbage. Tszyu brought a punch bag to Spencer. But as far as Tzsyu is concerned, he does not look like the same Uber-Conident fighter he once was.
He looks weaker in terms of boxing capacity, that is, reflexes and power, but spiritually I felt that I could literally see a man trying to find him last night. Right now, I couldn’t prefer Timmy against any of the Top 154 pounds.
The safe bet is that Tszyu Keith Thurman challenges good money. Even that fight is not a certainty for Timmy. There is no exploration report because I did not feel that Spencer was nothing but a doormat. If I didn’t know better, I would say that Joey had settled. You don’t have to tell you that Tim Tszyu is a must-watch. In a Timmy Tszyu fight there will be blood!
Delgado lost with the win
I don’t want to say much about the Lindolfo vs Elvis fight, because there wasn’t much to talk about. If faces are used to judge a fight, it was clear that Lindolfo won. Delgado made Elvis’s face look like hamburger meat by the end of the fight.
Some fans cry about a robbery, but the way I see it is if your Elvis’s career followed, then you know that he is his own worst enemy. Elvis is in order, lies passively, moves and content to do nothing.
Delgado is not much better and is notorious for having no sense of awareness when it comes to fighting. He has no feeling of urgent round to frustrating round. Delgado gets a D -Plus for performance alone. I don’t see him becoming a champion with such performances. If I don’t know better, I would suspect that Delgado has the concern about gas tank.
Other
Take-away plus from the night-kudos to referee Mark Taylor for the punishment of excessive possession. We need more of this in box. Greeting to the Aussies for having shown an insane appreciation for their man on his happiness. Hats to a good crowd in Las Vegas for Torrez.
The fans showed a lot of love for Torrez and Keyshawn Davis. Big Shot Out to Pro Box TV for showing Salas, which destroyed his husband Cruz on Saturday night. Finally, there was a good performance of the B -Kante, Vianello and Coolwell. We will see them again.
Did not bother to look at Joyce against Hrgovic or Janibek in poor, who cares to fight where I knew what the results would be in advance. Finally, congratulations to the difficult luck Mexican fighter Moran, who upset the American Myquan Williams. Willaims believes he had the fight in the bag, in the final round tried to run and hold after victory. I love it when that strategy comes back on fighters!
